Project Summary:
One of the greatest sports legends in history, Byron Nelson, won 11 consecutive golf tournaments in one season. 2005, marks the 60th anniversary of that amazing feat. EDS, host of the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament, came to Duffy & Partners looking to celebrate Byron Nelson's golf legacy in what is being called "The greatest year in golf." By celebrating great legends across multiple sporting arenas, we were able accentuate the magnitude of Byron Nelson's accomplishment.
1. What was the purpose of the project?
To give tribute to Byron Nelson, an amazing figure in not just golf, but all sports. By showing incredible accomplishments across multiple sports, the greatness of Byron Nelson’s feat is finally fully understood.
2. What was your measurement for success?
We knew this piece was successful when its original online application was extended to a variety of tournament venues. For example, this tribute was shown on monitors displayed on key points throughout the tournament course.
3. Who are the target user(s)?
The target users include visitors to the EDS and EDS Byron Nelson websites, and those attending or participating in the EDS Byron Nelson Golf Tournament.
4. What is the desired user experience for each?
Winning 11 consecutive golf tournaments is an amazing feat at any period in time. During what is being called "The greatest year in golf," guests to this website get the chance to understand the great accomplishment Byron Nelson achieved 60 years ago.
5. What were the project parameters or constraints you were working
within?
Stock photography and music we were required to showcase the dramatic
achievement of Bryon Nelson in a piece that needed to be no longer than 2.5 minutes.
6. What process and/or methodologies did your team use during the
project?
A designer paired with a copywriter researched the legacy of Byron
Nelson. While contrasting that legacy with other great sports achievements had by athletes such as Lance Armstrong and Wilt Chamberlain we were able to show Byron Nelson's impact in sports.
7. What have the results/response been to date?
As the tournament was just completed the results are yet to be determined. However, the success of the Byron Nelson Tribute seems evident since it is being used across multiple venues instead of solely for its intended web purpose.
